ABOUT Stewart Bergman

A native mid-westerner, Stewart Bergman is a graduate of the University of Kansas where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science in 1989. Mr. Bergman went on to graduate from the University of Kansas School of Law, where he earned two American Jurisprudence awards for academic excellence before graduating with a Juris Doctorate in 1992. Mr. Bergman is currently licensed to practice law in both Oregon and Arizona.

Stewart Bergman began his legal career as a prosecutor for the District Attorney's Office in Oregon where he practiced for nearly four years and handled thousands of cases. Although he handled a wide variety of criminal cases including drug offenses, domestic assaults, thefts, and burglaries, his main focus was prosecuting cases involving the impaired driver.

While employed as a Deputy District Attorney, Mr. Bergman was responsible for prosecuting vehicular crimes in the county. This included not only DUI cases but cases regarding impairment and reckless conduct involving the operation of motor vehicles. As a part of his duties, Mr. Bergman conducted training programs designed to assist law enforcement officers in administering field sobriety tests and issues relating to proper searches and seizures of evidence in the field.

Going on to practice as a criminal defense attorney in a private firm based out of Hood River, Oregon for nearly two years, Mr. Bergman continued to handle a wide variety of cases including but not limited to sex abuse, weapons offenses, domestic violence, drug cases and DUI defense.

In 2002, Mr. Bergman and his family moved to Arizona and after a brief stint at the City of Tucson Prosecutor's Office, he was employed as a Maricopa County Deputy Public Defender. He worked in the vehicular crimes bureau for Maricopa County handling a complex caseload of felony cases ranging from aggravated DUI to vehicular assaults and Manslaughter cases.

Handling thousands of cases in Maricopa County, Mr. Bergman obtained invaluable training and experience in handling every possible issue that may arise in a DUI case up to and including vehicular homicide cases. In fact, he was instrumental in having an aggravated assault case (a crash involving the accused driver being impaired and causing injury to another driver), dismissed by the State after he successfully argued the statute (A.R.S. 28-673), relied upon by the State for introducing the defendant's blood sample, was ruled unconstitutional.

Mr. Bergman went on to work in private practice as a criminal defense attorney in two firms in the Phoenix area and has now opened his own practice, exclusively focusing on defending those accused of criminal offenses.
